Artist's Comment: This is my Webster and Monica painting and this was so much fun painting. This was one of the paintings that "flowed" and it was the one I completed while attending the Summer Art Institute at Davis. We were told to use animals in our paintings and I found this story in a book about cat stories. The story was called The Story of Webster written by P.G. Wodehouse and it was the funniest short story I've ever read. I laughed out loud! Webster the cat was inherited by a niece and her boyfriend. Well, Webster was one of those very persnickety cats and looked at the boyfriend in disdain and disapproval in everything he did (even disapproving of his ukele!). The boyfriend almost goes completely crazy until they finally agree to make friends. Webster is the black cat in my painting, very much disgusted at the whole Monica Bill affair. The light, domestic scene above belies the ugly truth on the headlines below the cat. |
