Artist's Comment: This painting was done during my research period as well on the forced acculturation of Indians, and I found this story about a Native woman called "Indian Lucy". She married a miner who struck gold then the miner promptly ditched her for another woman. Well, she sued him and won in a San Francisco court! It was most amazing for those times, especially for an Indian woman, and she received her home and land as a result of the lawsuit. Again I used the cloth on her dress, and in the background a collage of images from her lawsuit and how she appeared in court. The bottom is a row of baskets which grounds her to her Native identity and gives her strength. I hate to say it, but I believe this was another painting that was victim to my overpainting. |
