Artist's Comment: This painting was also a result of my research on the Indian boarding schools. This woman was taken from an old photo of a Indian washerwoman at a Yosemite hotel. I found that young Native women of that time could find work as laundresses, domestics, or by making and selling baskets. I actually tried something new here and incorporated cloth into this piece - her dress, apron and laundry. My great-grandmother was full-blooded Mono Lake Paiute, and the Paiutes from this area would go to Yosemite and summer there. My great-grandmother, Jennie Summers, worked as a domestic. This is in the collection of the Stewart Indian Museum, Stewart, Nevada. |
