Scripture
(NKJV)
The
following are scriptures pertaining to grief, loss and mourning
that I have found to be life giving and truly comforting during
my time of grief.
Why?
To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose
under heaven: A time to be born And a time to die;... Ecclesiastess
3:1-2
The
righteous perishes, And no man takes it to heart; Merciful
men are taken away, While no one considers That the righteous
is taken away from evil. He shall enter peace; They shall
rest in their beds, Each one walking in his uprightness. Isaiah
57:1
And we know that all things work together for good to
those who love God, to those who are called according to His
purpose. Roman 8:28
God
knows our sorrow
My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You
so far from helping Me, and from the words of My groaning?
O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear; And in
the night season, and am not silent. But You are holy. Psalms
22:1-3 (prophetic verse concerning Jesus)
He
is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted
with grief, And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He
was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne
our griefs And carried our sorrows;...Isaiah
53:3-4 (prophetic
verse describing Jesus)
Comfort
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to
lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness
for His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley
of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with
me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare
a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint
my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy
shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell
in the house of the Lord forever. Psalms 23
Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.
Psalms 116:15
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Matthew 5:4
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither
angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor
any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in
all creations, will be able to separate us from the love of
God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38-39
Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe
also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it
were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place
for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come
again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you
may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.
Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are
going, and how can we know the way?" Jesus said to him,
"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes
ot the Father except through Me. John 14:1-6
Sorrow turns to Joy
Those who sow in tears Shall reap in joy. He who continually
goes forth weeping, Bearing seed for sowing, Shall doubtless
come again with rejoicing, Bringing his sheaves with him.
Psalms 126:5-6
Weeping may endure for the night, But joy comes in the
morning. Psalms 30:5
You have turned for me my mourning into dancing; You have
put off my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness, To the
end that my glory may sing praise to You and not be silent.
O Lord my God, I will give thanks to You forever. Psalms
30:11-12
The Wisdom of Sorrow
A good name is better than precious ointment, And the
day of death than the day of one's birth; Better to go to
the house of mourning Than to go to the house of feasting,
For that is the end of all men; And the living will take it
to heart. Sorrow is better than laughter, For by a sad countenance
the heart is made better. The heart of the wise is in the
house of mourning, But the heart of fools is in the house
of mirth. Ecclesiastes 7:1-4
The Healing
Touch of God
He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds.
Psalms 147:3
Hope for the Future
And God
will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be
no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more
pain, for the former things have passed away.
Revelation 21:4
But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning
those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who
have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again,
even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.
For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who
are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by
no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself
will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an
archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ
will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be
caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord
in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore
comfort one another with these words.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Therefore
we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing,
yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light
affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a
far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do
not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which
are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary,
but the things which are not seen are eternal. For we know
that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have
a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal
in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to
be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed,
having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. For we who
are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want
to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be
swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us for this
very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home
in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith,
not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather
to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18 to 5:1-8
Promise of Restoration
So I will
restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten.
Joel 2:25
I have given
rest to the weary and joy to all sorrowing..
Jeremiah 31:25
To
comfort all who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes,
The oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the
spirit of heaviness;...Isaiah
61:3
