bullet  General Notes:

Taken from book

Charles Isaac Hawley admired good horses and owned one of the first Henry rifles in the vicinity of Poplar Creek, Montana. His son related that one day his father encountered an Assiniboine chief named White Dog. Dan says to him, after showing him this gun (a Henry), "I'll give you this gun and that horse and saddle out there if you'll stand here so far and let me shoot at you." white Dog was quite a man among his people. He had a musket he sued to let htem shoot at him with, and he'd show 'em the bullets come out of his mouth. Magic, you know. Of course his people didn't know this magicians' trick...The musket wasn't loaded, or if it was, it was fixed so it wouldn't shoot straight. White Dog looked at him and said, "The white man's medicine is different from the Indian's."

Born in California according to a 1900 Harlem Township census record as reported by his children Frank and James Hawley.

According to another census document that Charles himself reported, he was born in California. The spaces for the birthplace of mother and father were left empty; he must not have known. I believe this is the same charles Isaac Hawley based on the location. His wife was noted as Florence C. Hawley. His first wife Nellie died in the late 1800's and he probably remarried to Florence. His occupation is horseman. Florence was only 17 years old while he was 46. She was white. They were only married 6 months at the time this census was taken and had no children. they lived in Sweetgrass Township near Rocky Boy Indian Reservation.

In the family search.org, I found middle initial T. when listing father and mother of Charles W. Hawley married to imelda.
