It is with great sadness that we convey the sudden passing of Mr. Calvin Birchum, instructional assistant, Intech, Rockville. Calvin passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2009.

Calvin had been with the College for many years, starting as a contractor with the Office of Information Technology. Later, he joined the staff as an instructional assistant with the Instructional Technology group at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, and he has worked for the last five years with Instructional Technology, Rockville Campus.

Calvin is well remembered by many at the College for his collegiality and easy going manner. He always had a story to tell or an observation to share. Calvin was an avid Toastmaster, and many certificates of accomplishment surround his desk. Above all, Calvin was very proud of his Native American heritage; he was a member of the Western Shoshone Nation, and his heart always lay with his roots in Nevada. He has taken one last trip home to be buried there.

Calvin's funeral will take place in Shurz, Nevada on Saturday, October 17th.

Anyone wishing to send a remembrance to the funeral can it send to:
Smith Family Funeral Home
505 Rio Vista Street
Fallon, NV 89406.

Cards may be sent to Roger Cunha, Calvin's brother, at:
P.O. Box 311
Schurz, NV 89427.

A memorial to Calvin is being planned in the next few weeks at the Rockville Campus. Information will be forthcoming.

Please join us in expressing our sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Calvin Birchum.
