Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday March 10 at the Home Economics Building at the Tri-County Fairgrounds in Bishop for Gregory Mark Hess, Rev. Stan Summers will officiate. Burial will be private.

Born Dec. 18, 1954 in Bishop to Earl and Barbara Hess, Greg died March 3, 2006 in Bakersfield, 10 years to the day of the passing of his beloved mother.

Greg was the fifth of seven children. He attended schools in Bishop, graduating from Wavoka High (Palisades High) in June 1973. He was known by his friends as “Ceasar.”

Greg attended Sacramento State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology. He also attended Lassen Junior College, where he earned his Native American Construction Trades Certificate. Greg received his cosmetology license from Frederico’s Beauty College. Throughout his employment career, Greg was employed by the following agencies; Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service, as one of the original Smoke Dancers, an all-Indian firefighting crew; the Inter-tribal Council of California; Toiyabe Indian Health Clinic as clinic manager at the Camp Antelope Clinic; and Ione Band of Miwok Indians as a housing community development director. Greg’s last employment was with the Owens Valley Career Development Center as a career counseling employment coordinator for vocational education. Greg also served on several state and federal communities.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Barbara Hess, and brother Randy Hess.

Greg is survived by his daughters, Carly Chope Hess and Bergen Dalene Elizabeth Hess of Sacramento; sisters and brothers-in-law, Earleen and Jack Williams, Jeanne and Tom Crowl, and Lynette Hess; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Gretchen Hess and Mervin and Julie Hess; aunts, Virginia Morales of Susanville and Josephine Einerson and Pat Hall of Illinois; uncles, Don Hess and Buddy Summers and great-uncle Steve Brown, all of Bishop; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
