The Sacramento Bee Monday June 19, 2000
The image James Woottonhas of his son, Jeremiah, is one of a spirited stallion, strong and graceful, and yet under control. Power under control. "Jeremy was everything a parent could want in a child: brilliant, athletic with amazing strength, unlimited potential, yet humble and meek," James Wootton said Sunday of his 16-year old son, who died Thursday. Jeremiah Lee Wootton, born July 27, 1983, was working on the roof of a Pocket-area home - a summer construction job -- when he collapsed. He died later at a hospital. At first, authorities thought the youth may have died of heat stroke after working on a day when the temperature reached 104 degrees. But the boy's body did not show signs of heat-related symptoms. An official cause of death has yet to be determined. Jeremy, as he was called by his family, was very close to his parents and his younger step-siblings, whom he often babysat. A good student who earned A's and B's, he was an avid weight lifter and wrestler at Roseville's Woodcreek High School. "At 15 years old and weighing 160 pounds, he bench-pressed 270 pounds," his father said. So impressive was Jeremy's physical ability that his wrestling coach placed him in the varsity league, though he was only a sophomore. Jeremy's religious faith was strong as well. "He had such self control and grace," his father said. "When I would say something negative about someone who had offended me, he would say, "Dad, don't say that.' He was born with a great heart."
In addition to his mother, Margaret Clark of Antelope, and his father James Wootton of West Sacramento, Jeremiah Lee Wootton is survived by his sister Essie, and brothers Daniel and Jonathon Wootton. A memorial service will be held at noon at the Church of the Valley, Mount Vernon Cemetery, 8401 Greenback Lane, Fair Oaks. A trust fund to help pay for funeral expenses has been established at World Savings, 11201 Gold Express Drive, Gold River, 95670.
