Mary Randolph Gordon Williams, who was active in civic and charitable affairs here for many years, died of infirmities Tuesday (Oct. 22, 1996) at her home in Ladue.
She was 98.
Born and raised in St. Louis, Mrs. Williams was a descendant of the Li ndell and Christy families of St. Louis and the Randolph and Carter families of Virginia.
She graduated from Mary Institute and earned a bachelor's degree in 1920 from Washington University. She also attended Columbia University in New York.
She was involved in numerous community causes and in the Colonial Dames of America and the Missouri Historical Society, which honored her in 1988 for her many years of support.
She was a lover of literature and the arts and an avid landscaper, gardener and horsewoman.
She was the widow of John Gates Williams, president of the St. Louis Stock Exchange and of the Williams Kurrus Investment Co. He also was a leader in many fields of civic service in St. Louis. He died in 1964. She was also preceded in death by her only child, Ann Cary Pettus Dickson.
Among survivors are a granddaughter, Mary Randolph Ballinger of Ladue; four nieces, Maud Wells Gordon Gilbert of St. Louis, Elizabeth Lindell Gordon Aaron of Atlanta, Marie Williams Von Gontard of Greenwich, Conn., and Georgia Williams Lewis of Locust Valley, N.Y.; and a nephew, Eugene F. Williams of St. Louis.
A private graveside service will be held for family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Missouri Botanical Garden or to a charity of the donor's choice.

The picture was given to me by Elizabeth Gordon Aaron, of her father and aunt. This picture is of her aunt Mary Randolph Gordon. She said her father and her aunt (siblings) were very close until death.

Mary married John Gates Williams, son of Living and Living, on 21 Mar in 1921. (John Gates Williams was born on 24 Nov 1897 in St. Louis and died in 1964 in St. Louis.)
