bullet  General Notes:

Eleazer came to "Prospect Hill" as a tutor for the children there and married
one of them

A fellow excursionist of Mark Twain, and an acquaintance of Jane Clemons', in 1855 founded the Trinity Protestant Episcolian Church in St. Louis, where he was rector. He was educated at Brown University and Princeton Theological seminary, served as president of Kemper College, and Pastor of St. George's church.

In a letter Mark Twain wrote to Jane Clemons dated June 1, 1867, he wrote "I am resigned to Rev. Mr. Hutchinson's or anybody else's supervision. I don't mind it. I am fixed. I have got a splendid, immoral, tobacco-smoking, wine-drinking god-less roommate who is as good & true & right-minded a man as ever lived - a man whose blameless conduct & example will always be an eloquent sermon to all who shall ever come within their influence. But send on the professional preachers-there are none that are better to converse with-if they ain't narrow-minded & bigoted they make good companions." From the Mark Twain Project.
