bullet  General Notes:

Lula Garfield was born in Montana May 30, 1873 - specific date came from a tombstone I saw in Poplar. I think her given name may have been Louisa but she is not know by that name. Her Indian name is Wa ya wa wi yan according to a 1901 census . This is Dan Mitchell’s future wife, our great-grandmother. According to the July 31, 1888 census rolls, she was listed as the daughter of Eagle, age 70. She was listed as Assiniboine. Her father’s Indian name was Wammdi which means Eagle in Sioux. I know this incorrectly spelled, and I realize that the census taker just wrote down the name how it sounded. She was number 9, he was 160 on theYear: 1888; Roll: M595_151; Agency: Fort Peck. Her Indian records are not recorded in the Mitchell family pedigree at Fort Peck! It says record not found. I did find some census records that show her Indian blood and I plan on submitting this to Fort Peck with the purpose of having everyone’s blood quantum corrected. No mother was listed for her. She was age 15 at the time. That means her father was 55 when he had her if this is accurate.

Her brother (shown on Indian census) as James Garfield says his father is white and born in Ireland. This would mean that Lula was 1/2 Assiniboine.

She was last listed on the June 1907 census as Dan' wife before her death.

bullet  Medical Notes:

According to Theresa Howes, her mother Ursula said that Lula suffered from "asthma" and got very sick and was sent to a hospital or sanitarium for TB. The children were waiting for her to come home at Christmas time and she never did. The children were sent to different boarding schools after that.

• Cemetery. according to montana death records, this is lula's death date. It says Lula Mitchel only one "l" at the end of Mitchell, but I think this is the same person
