Louise Elizabeth Courchene, known to her family as “Joni”, passed away on August 17, 2004 in Scottsdale, AZ from congestive hearth failure after a heart attack. She was born on March 5, 1911 in Wolf Point, MT to parents Phillip and Sarah (Mitchell) Courchene. Louise was married and divorced twice, to William Gagnon and Fremont Green. Louise had no children. She retired from Lockheed Aircraft Company, Burbank CA in 1975. She then moved to Scottsdale to be closer to her sister, Rosemary, in Phoenix, AZ.
Louise traveled throughout the world on her vacations. She was a devout Roman Catholic and toured the sights of the Apparitions of the Blessed Mother at Lourdes, France, Fatima, Portugal, Guadalupe, Mexico and visited Rome, Italy. She sent family members religious item and had Masses said in their honor. Her mother, Sarah Mitchell Courchene, was a member of the 1904 Fort Shaw Championship Women’s Basketball team at the 1904 Worlds Fair in St. Louis, Missouri.
Her parents and her siblings preceded her in death: Rosemary Courchene Holden, David Joseph “Chappy” Courchene, Charles Lloyd Courchene, Gertrude Esther Courchene Applegate, Dorothy Marie Courchene Smith, Marion Phyllis Courchene Hoffman, Richard Martin “Budgie” Courchene, Francis Courchene, Constance Courchene, and Evaline Courchene. Many nieces, nephews and cousins in California, Arizona, Texas, Montana, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Mexico, and elsewhere survive her.
Louise will be inurned in the Courchene Family Cemetery in Wolf Point, MT at family graveside services. A Mass will be dedicated to her memory in Arizona and in Montana. The family suggests your contributions to Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Parish, 543 Dawson St, Wolf Point, MT 59201, in memory of Louise Courchene.
